The Fond du Lac Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will sponsor the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program for families of persons diagnosed with a serious mental illness.

The 12-week series of classes will start from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Friendship Corner, 27 Third St., Fond du Lac. It will continue for 12 consecutive Mondays, concluding Nov. 24.

Those planning to attend should enter from the parking lot off Second Street behind the building.

The course is designed specifically for parents, siblings, spouses and teenage or adult children of individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.

It covers all of the major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, the mood disorders (bipolar disorder and major depression), panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and borderline personality disorder.

The course offers practical coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse, listening and communication techniques, problem-solving skills, and self-care skills.

In addition, the course covers current medications, treatment and recovery.

The course was developed by an experienced family member mental health professional and is taught by trained NAMI-Fond du Lac family member volunteer instructors.

The Family-to-Family Education Program is free to participants, but pre-registration is required. Class size is limited.

For more information, call Anne Henry at 923-1789 or Audrey Roeder at 923-3083.
