Drug Rehab Programs Offer a Dual Diagnosis

When you think about drug addiction, sometimes it is hard to see beyond the uncontrolled abuse of drugs.  For a lot of drug addicts that is only the surface of the problem.  For some, it is a much deeper rooted psychological and emotional issue.  There are factors in life that just make the feelings you get from drugs all the more desirable.  One such factor is a psychiatric or mood disorder.  We are talking disorders like depression, anxiety, and bi polar disorder.  These things can lead to drug addiction.  Drug rehab programs have learned to address such issues of disorder by offering services that treat these problems in addition to the addiction.

Fact of the matter, such a mood or psychiatric problem can have a heavy hand in the development of an addiction.  The chemical imbalances of the central nervous system, when a disorder is present, can make the individual susceptible to the influences of drugs and alcohol.  If gone undiagnosed, a person can turn to drugs and alcohol to suppress these feelings. These are feelings that the disorder itself is the cause of.  If it is diagnosed, drugs may be the self medicating solution to suppress these feelings.  A medical solution would ultimately be most effective at this stage.  The sad thing, unbeknownst to the individual suppressing their disorder, is they are developing a compound problem.  In addition to a psychiatric condition, the person has also developed an addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Drug rehab programs that offer treatment for addiction and disorders are commonly called dual diagnosis.  A dual diagnosis facility addresses areas of concern, the addiction and the disorder. Therapy in such a facility is broadened to address the issues that are the cause of addictive behavior.  For many individuals it is a co-occurring disorder in the form of depression, anxiety, and alike. Getting the person off of drugs and stabilized can create a solid environment for addressing the co-occurring mood problem.  Likewise, an easing of the mood problem can allow for a better platform for addressing alcohol and drug addiction.

Dual diagnostic services can also address undiagnosed problems.  Alcohol and drugs are great suppressants of feelings and emotions.  Once off of these substances, a person can experience feelings that they do not know how to deal with.  These could in fact be undiagnosed co-occurring disorders. The addict in drug rehab was unaware of such a problem, because the drugs or alcohol kept them suppressed.  These feelings can be something as simple as addiction withdrawal (A side effect caused by the absence of drugs and alcohol in the central nervous system). They can also be a much more dynamic problem.  A dual diagnosis drug rehab program can help to diagnose, clarify and treat such a co-occurring disorder.

When you look at drug addiction that is coupled with something like depression, you are facing a dynamic problem.  Dual diagnosis addiction treatment is integral at simplifying such a problem.  Treatment and therapy is personalized to address the specific disorder issues in the drug addict or alcoholic. It provides an avenue for recovery from both addiction and disorder.  This information was provided by Cirque Lodge, a private alcohol and drug treatment facility in the mountains of Sundance Utah.  Cirque Lodge is known for effective dual diagnostic treatment of substance addiction and co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
